WhatsApp revealed the biometric security lock feature for iOS users earlier this month. The feature is said to add a layer of security over the application that protects your private chats from the unwanted access even when your phone is left opened and unattended for extended periods. But, things are not actually what they appear. Another bug has been seen in the biometric feature of the application that enables anybody to access your chat despite the touch ID or face ID.
A Reddit user who goes by the name u/de_X_ter has spotted a bug in WhatsApp that allows one to bypass the Touch ID or Face lock feature of WhatsApp. According to the screenshot shared by the Reddit user, the bug activates when one tries to access the WhatsApp Share Extension which basically let you share anything on your phone via WhatsApp.
The users disclose that to bypass the WhatsApp’s biometric verification you first need to share something via iOS Share Sheet on your phone. WhatsApp gives you three choices for the validation feature to become effective. These are-‘Quickly’, ‘Following 1 minute’, ‘Following 15 minutes’, and ‘Following 60 minutes’. The bug is initiated when users choose the ‘Quickly’ choice. The bug is seen just on iPhone since the biometric feature is at present accessible just for iOS users for the time being.
The WhatsApp biometric feature is accessible as a stable build for iOS users. The feature relies upon the iPhone display you are utilizing. Those utilizing iPhone X or family models will get the Face ID lock while those utilizing more established iPhone models will get the unique mark lock.
To activate the feature: Go to WhatsApp’s Settings> Account > Privacy > Screen Lock. Empower the Touch ID or Face ID depending upon your phone. You next need to choose if you need the biometric validation to apply promptly or after an interval of a minute, 15 minutes, or 60 minutes. Know that the verification feature will protect your chats from obscure access when your phone is left unattended. However, it won’t conceal your chats from the notification panel. For that, you should change your phone’s settings.
