Google joins the story train, as does Snapchat or Instagram

Google has launched its own ‘stories’ feature similar to the one found on Snapchat and Instagram. However, this feature has a different take on stories than the ones found on other social media platforms. With this new feature, Google plans to target mobile phone and tablet users with image-driven news articles. The content that will be presented to users in the form of AMP stories will be designed to load much faster on mobile devices.

Initially, these AMP stories will be populated by news articles from major media publication houses like CNN, Conde Nast, Hearst, Mashable, Meredith, Mic, Vox Media and The Washington Post. However, soon we will get to see other news brands also taking part in this. As this feature is currently available in Developer Preview, Google is welcoming all the publishers to try it out for themselves.

 

These new AMP Stories will fill the user’s smartphone displays with an image or video which will relay the news to them. Users will be also be provided with a button to read more, or they can simply swipe to the next news article.

If you want to try out the new AMP Stories feature for yourself, you can visit g.co/ampstories on your smartphone or tablet. After you are on the page simply search for the news publication you want to read. Google will then bring up all their news stories for you to read. In their blog post announcing the feature, Google said that they plan to bring this feature to more products across the Google platform. They also said that they want to expand the way that these stories appear in Google Search.

The feature is also accessible via desktops and laptops. However, its promoters have mentioned that it provides a much more immersive experience to the users on mobile devices.
